I haven't done a lot of submarine related posting for a while, so here are a couple of items for you to chew on.
First, from the Norwich (CT) Bulletin, comes this item about the Ledyard VFW pinning its hopes of increasing membership with younger members on submariners. Specifically, submariners with Strategic Deterrent Patrol Pins. Now, those of us who served on boomers can join the VFW, while our fast attack friends will have to sit on the outside. Sorry guys.
And, the Associated Press notes that on this date in 1960, the nuclear-powered radar picket submarine USS Triton (SSN-586) departed New London, Conn. on the first-ever totally submerged circumnavigation by a vessel, a voyage which took nearly three months. I'm checking out the VFW. Years ago, my dad was a member, but later quit, as the Patrol pin was not a qualifier for membership.
I approached my local VFW chapter as I have the Navy Expeditionary Medal. They weren't interested in me. Most of them are over 80.
Their loss.
