Spreading my wisdom for all to enjoy. Where I do little research and pass off my opinion as fact, then close debate by reminding you, "I'm right, you're wrong."
Today I learned that all those deterrent patrols were good for something, membership in the VFW. If you likewise qualify and want to join, go to the VFW's web site.
Not a Boomer guy but we used to get awarded the Navy Expeditionary Medal, supposedly for participation in an opposed landing on foreign soil. I always thought they were really stretching for that one. I have heard, on good authority, the VFW will let you in with that.
There are a few VFW posts close to me, in widely varying socio economic neighborhoods. I have been to them. None of them really do anything for me, plus, I'm not much of a drinker anymore and that seems to be a prerequisite. Even at 56, I seem to skew young and liberal for this organization.
There is a chapter of the USSVI that meets in Seal Beach, only a few miles away, on the third Saturday of every month. It's a little intimidating, since it seems to be officer heavy, with several distinguished members but I really should check it out. Might be worthwhile. They also have very neat hats, with big white plumes.
I went to a reunion of my sub crew, SSN 575, in conjunction with the annual combined WWII and post WWII subvets organizations in Reno 4 or five years ago and that was a lot of fun, even though none of the guys I hung around with showed up. They had another one last year, in Bremerton. Too far to go, too expensive and it seemed to be real "family oriented". Maybe one every 25 years is my limit.
